This is but one of the words I can think of to describe our experience yesterday at The Grillroom and Sushi Bar. Sobremesa, smorgasbord and gastronomical extravaganza also come to mind.

This exciting, upmarket venue in Brooklyn, Pretoria boasts two terraces, a lower restaurant area, bar, upper restaurant area with a cigar lounge, easy seating and an impressive wine cellar.

Elegance and sophistication come together in a blend of ultra-modern design, high ceilings, exquisite finishings, and attention to detail.

Complimented with attentive waitrons, a dedicated and committed General Manager and passionate Executive Chef, this is for sure a winning recipe for success.

We started with a comprehensive tour of the facilities. General Manager, Mark Williams, took great pride in sharing with us the details and philosophy behind The Grillroom and Sushi Bar brand.   It is very clear from when you enter, that the restaurant is run with precision and passion.

While the restaurant is designed with open spaces and clean lines it does lend itself to "private" groups, and both the terraces can be closed off if needed.  Although the clientele is chiefly business orientated, children are welcome and patrons can be accommodated in Terrace Two.

The Grillroom and Sushi Bar offers an extensive menu ranging from snacks, light lunches, sushi, children's menus, set menus and grills.

Jamie Sutherland is the Executive Chef and his passion for food is evident in the way his eyes light up as he describes each dish.  We were treated to the Autumn/Winter Menu.  The focus is on using locally sourced ingredients, with the exception of the Salmon!

Great thought has gone into the design of each dish.  Taste, texture and experience are combined on a plate.  The flavours mix together to create a veritable experience that leaves you wanting more.  From the buttery Jersey Beef Fillet to the Beetroot Jelly with Raspberry Sponge, coconut-infused Panna Cota and Rosewater Sorbet.

All the dishes are prepared on-site - including the breads and brioches needed to complete the dishes.  I loved the bread and had more than my fair share, slathered in fresh butter....the crust was chewy with just the right amount of course salt that left delightful bursts of flavour in my mouth.

We were treated to a Sushi platter that was fresh and tasty, well presented and a great way to start the day, chased down with a beautiful chilled Chardonnay.

Dish after dish followed in splendid succession; each one redolent with flavour and texture.  Chef Jamie described each one in detail and we enjoyed!

Springbok carpaccio, grilled prawns in a lobster broth, traditional steamed mussel pots - served with a lesson on how to eat them!

Fresh oysters and my personal favourite, Au gratin topped grilled oysters.

Lamp chops, Kassler rib, Salmon, Risotto, Tuna and crab poke bowl, Salmon and crab tower, Beef Fillet, Salt and Pepper Calamari, Chicken Salad, Pork Scratchings Popcorn, double-fried chips, Venison Pie with the tastiest, cheddar infused crust...we had it all.

Parmesan Mash, lightly grilled vegetables, sun-dried tomatoes, salsas and sauces - everything coming together in a flavour explosion.

We enjoyed a bold Shiraz from the well-stocked cellar.  The cellar carries an impressive array of South African wines, MCC's and imported champagne.

Stuffed to capacity and unable to move we rolled over onto the couches to enjoy our desserts!

Summer surprise mille-feuille, chocolate s'more, Coconut Panna Cotta, a selection of hand made ice creams; bitter orange, thyme, coffee, rose water, blood orange, cinnamon, lemon meringue tarte, classic bread and butter pudding until we could eat no more.

The Grillroom and Sushi Bar is the perfect setting for lazy lunches, and the Autumn/Winter menu lends itself to great wines chosen with care by Mark, and if you are so inclined you can end your feast with a fat Cuban
